Blog name change ?

I think I am going to change the name of this blog. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but now it is time for a rethink.

What a beautiful day, here by the green river. I was here with Michelle, Per, Corry and Lizzie. I had so much to do today, which I blew off to enjoy the summer heat in May.

Tomorrow is a holiday, Michelle is driving 8 hours round trip, I was thinking about goig, but the work needs doing. Our cat is fabulous, Ivan Boug Mao, so I better crash.

Hey, There world !

I am back and Bigger than ever. The scientology thing, Whoa ! I got really sucked into that for a few days. Boy Oh Boy, L.Ron Hubbard, what an Evil Evil thing he wrought. Reading his delusional cult schemes in the face of the huge 'success' of his enterprise is just breathtaking in it's scope and powers of manipulation.

At a certain point I had pull myself away from his schema and the testimonials written by people who has found their way out of the labyrinth of the Scientology cult. What I found most disturbing was the concept of the 'The Hard Sell' and 'The Mark' I had a visualization of Scientology as an entity feeding on it's own followers...

Do Fish Swim? Do Birds Fly?

The simple mechanisms of mind control. From "The Road to Xenu". Margery Wakefield describes the simple steps then led to her enslavement in a cult for 12 years.

The Road to Xenu, by Margery Wakefield

Chapter 5
Do Fish Swim? Do Birds Fly?
Ethics, Conditions. TR1: Dear Alice. TR3. TR4. Tone 40 ashtray. TR9. Gone.

I was in a strange city in which the buildings were all a monotone shade of grey. I stood in the middle of a wide street as hundreds of people ran past me, shouting at me and motioning for me to follow them. I sensed danger. Everyone seemed to be running toward an opening at the side of the street. It looked like the entrance to a subway station. As I ran down into the dark opening, a door closed heavily behind me.

In the darkness I saw people huddled together, some crying, some silent. I understood suddenly that this was a bomb shelter. I was in some city of the future. The faces around me mirrored the terror I was feeling inside. Suddenly I felt the impact of something hitting the ground above us with tremendous force. The earth was shaking violently. Several people near me were screaming as panic began to spread. I knew there was no hope. The earth shook crazily as all life above us was destroyed.

I opened my eyes. Sunlight was streaming through the front windows. Oh, I thought with relief, it was just a dream. Then I realized that the earth really was shaking. The pictures on the opposite wall were swaying back and forth against the wall. "What in the world?" I said out loud. On the other side of the room, a man with deep blue eyes and a dark suntan was watching me with obvious interest. He was dressed in a white uniform with gold braid hanging from the shoulder. He sat on his cot, putting on his shoes.

"Don't worry, it's only a tremor." He seemed oblivious to the shaking room. "We get them all the time."

I didn't say anything, but lay there clutching my sheet and waiting for the shaking to stop. Finally, it did.

"I've never felt anything like that before." I was trying not to let my voice reflect the panic I was feeling. "If that's just a tremor, I'd hate to be in a real one."

I looked curiously at my roommate. The room had been empty when I came back from class last night. I had fallen into an exhausted sleep, and did not remember anyone coming into the room during the night. The third bed also looked like it had been slept in.

"Sea Org members must not get much sleep," I commented. "I didn't hear you come in during the night."

He looked over and smiled. "We can't be thinking about sleep when there is a planet to clear," he said moralistically. "We can all catch up on sleep later. Ron says that every minute of time is like a gold coin that we have to spend. And how we spend them may very well determine the fate of the earth." He looked over at me challengingly, and I suddenly felt guilty for being in bed.

"What time is it anyway?" I asked, not seeing a clock anywhere in the room. "It's about 0800," he answered, using military time. "Aren't you supposed to be on course?"

"Oh, no, I'm late," I wailed. I grabbed my clothes and ran to the bathroom down the hall. Within seconds I was sprinting toward the center. No time for coffee this morning. I just had a second to glance appreciatively at the warm morning sun, already high in the sky.

I walked into the courseroom, and looked around for George. He was busy giving a checkout to one of the other students. As I looked in his direction, trying to catch his attention, I heard a voice behind me.

"Miss Wakefield, you're late." It was more accusation than observation. I turned around to look into the steely eyes of the Course Supervisor. "I'm afraid you'll have to go to Ethics." She handed me a pink sheet of paper on which she had written, "Late for class. To Ethics for handling."

"Ethics?" I looked at her for an explanation.

"Ethics. There in the back. You'll see the sign on the door." She pointed down the hallway to an office in the back.

Obediently, I headed down the hall and knocked on the half open door. On the door was a sign: "Ethics. Master at Arms."

"Come in." The voice sounded like that of a child.

I peered into the room and saw a young teenage boy seated at a desk behind an E-meter. "Well, what is it?" he looked at me coolly.

"I was late for course," I explained, handing him the pink sheet. "I'm afraid I overslept. I was extremely exhausted last night."

"Do you have some counter-intention to being on course?" he looked at me accusingly.

"Counter-intention?" I asked.

He handed me a Scientology dictionary. "Look it up," he ordered.

I took the dictionary and turned quickly to the C's. "Counter-intention," I read. "A determination to follow a goal which is in direct conflict with those known to be the goals of the group."

"You need to locate your counter-intention that caused you to be late for course," he said matter of factly.

"Well, I think it was just that no one woke me up. I don't have an alarm clock. I would buy one but I spent all my money on the course." I looked at him helplessly. Why was I feeling guilty?

"I'd like to indicate that you are in a condition of Danger," he looked at me coldly.

Why was I feeling so defensive around this kid, I wondered to myself. He couldn't be older than thirteen or fourteen. Yet he had the demeanor of someone much older. He spoke with the authority of an adult accustomed to commanding others.

"What is a condition of danger?" I was feeling more and more insecure.

"Here," he said, handing me a set of papers in red ink, stapled together, and titled, "Conditions." "Go back in the courseroom and starrate this HCOB" (I guessed that HCOB stood for Hubbard Communications Office Bulletin, which was printed at the top of the first page). "When you have finished that, come back and see me. And make sure you look up your misunderstood words." He looked down at his work, and I realized that I was dismissed.

I went back into the courseroom, and began to read through the bulletin he had given me.

Conditions. A condition is an operating state, and oddly enough in the physical universe there are several formulas connected with these operating states.

Then there was a table of twelve Conditions, reading from top to bottom: Power, Power Change, Affluence, Normal Operation, Emergency, Danger, Nonexistence, Liability, Doubt, Enemy, Treason, Confusion.

For each condition there was a formula. The formulas were to be applied one step at a time, I read, until the entire formula is completed, at which time the person may apply to be upgraded to the next higher condition.

The formula for the condition of Confusion, the lowest condition, was: "FIND OUT WHERE YOU ARE."

"I wonder what that means," I thought. I looked carefully through the sentence. I understood all the words, yet it still didn't make any sense. But I decided not to ask.

"Treason," I read next,

is defined as betrayal after trust. The formula for the condition of treason is FIND OUT THAT YOU ARE.

I continued to read.

When a person is an avowed and knowing enemy of an individual, a group, a project or organization, a condition of Enemy exists. The formula for the condition of Enemy is just one step: FIND OUT WHO YOU REALLY ARE.

The next formula was more complex.

When one cannot make up one's mind as to an individual, a group, organization or project a Condition of Doubt exists. The formula is:

1. Inform oneself honestly of the actual intentions and activities of that individual, group, project or organization brushing aside all bias and rumor.
2. Examine the statistics of the individual, group, project or organization.
3. Decide on the basis of `the greatest good for the greatest number of dynamics' whether or not it should be attacked, harmed, suppressed or helped.

Then after one had examined the statistics of the group one currently belonged to, one would,

Join or remain in or befriend the one which progresses toward the greatest number of dynamics and announce it publicly to both sides.

"Dynamics." The word was being used in a new and unfamiliar context. I picked up the Scientology dictionary.

"Dynamics," I quickly located the right page. "There could be said to be eight urges in life," I read.

These we call dynamics. These are motives or motivations. We call them the eight dynamics.

The first dynamic is the urge toward existence as oneself. Here we have individuality expressed fully. This can be called the self dynamic.

The second dynamic is the urge toward existence as a sexual or bisexual activity.

I blinked. Did I read that right? I looked again. Yes, that's what it said.

This dynamic actually has two divisions. Second dynamic (a) is the sexual act itself and the second dynamic (b) is the family unit, including the rearing of children. This can be called the sex dynamic.

The third dynamic is the urge toward existence in groups of individuals. The school, the society, the town, the nation are each part of the third dynamic, and each one is a third dynamic. This is also called the group dynamic.

The fourth dynamic is the urge toward existence as mankind. Whereas the white race would be considered a third dynamic, all the races would be considered the fourth dynamic. This can be called the mankind dynamic.

The fifth dynamic is the urge toward existence of the animal kingdom. This includes all living things whether animal or vegetable. The fish in the sea, the beasts of the field or the forest, grass, trees, flowers, or anything directly and intimately motivated by life. This could be called the animal dynamic.

The sixth dynamic is the urge toward existence as the physical universe. The physical universe is composed of matter, energy, space and time. In Scientology we take the first letter of these words and coin a word, MEST. This can be called the universe dynamic.

The seventh dynamic is the urge toward existence as or of spirits. Anything spiritual, with or without identity, would come under the heading of the seventh dynamic. This could be called the spiritual dynamic.

The eighth is the urge toward existence as infinity. This is also identified as the Supreme Being. It is carefully observed here that the science of Scientology does not intrude into the dynamic of the Supreme Being. This can be called the infinity or God dynamic.

I finished reading the lengthy explanation. So this is a new way of categorizing and thinking about life, I thought. All right, I can handle that. And I felt relief to know that Scientology believed in God. (I was to find out much more about that later in my Scientology career.) I went back to reading about Conditions.

The next condition was Liability, for which the formula was:

1. Decide who are one's friends.
2. Deliver an effective blow to the enemies of the group one has been pretending to be part of despite personal danger.
3. Make up the damage one has done by personal contribution far beyond the ordinary demands of a group member.
4. Apply for re-entry of the group by asking the permission of each member of it to rejoin and rejoining only by majority permission.

The formula for Non-Existence was simpler:

1. Find a comm (communication) line.
2. Make yourself known.
3. Discover what is needed or wanted.
4. Do, produce and/or present it.

I wanted to yawn, but I looked warily at the Supervisor circling the tables, and decided to suppress it.

Next I read through the Danger Formula, the one which apparently applied to me. The formula read:

1. By-pass habits or normal routines.
2. Handle the situation and any danger in it.
3. Assign self a danger condition.
4. Get in your own personal ethics by finding what you are doing that is out-ethics and use self-discipline to correct it and get honest and straight.
5. Reorganize your life so that the dangerous situation is not continually happening to you.
6. Formulate and adopt firm policy that will hereafter detect and prevent the same situation from continuing to occur.

So what I have to do, I thought to myself, is simply get someone to wake me up in the morning so that this doesn't happen again. That's easy enough. I read through the Conditions bulletin again, trying to grasp the material. According to the theory, if I successfully apply the formula for the condition I am currently in, which is Danger, then I should be able to move up to the next higher condition. For me that would be Emergency. Part of the Emergency Formula had to do with changing your operating basis. "You have got to stiffen discipline or stiffen ethics because life itself is going to discipline the individual." That meant that I was going to have to become very disciplined about getting to class on time, I realized. Well, that's no problem.

Once out of Emergency I would be safely in Normal Operation.

I sighed. I didn't realize that oversleeping could be so complicated. I would be sure not to do it again if I could help it.

I finished reading the policy, then went over to George and asked him to check me out. He did, and I passed easily. Now I was ready to return to the young dictator in Ethics.

He looked up as I entered. "Did you apply the correct formula?" he asked stiffly.

"I think so," I looked down at him awkwardly. "Mostly, I just have to find someone to wake me up every morning."

"Well make sure it doesn't happen again or you'll find yourself in Liability," he warned me. "OK. You can go back to course." He initialed the pink sheet and handed it back to me. "Take this back to your Course Supervisor."

"Let me ask you a question," I said. "These conditions, what do you use them for? Are they just used on the course?"

He looked at me condescendingly. "The Ethics conditions are one of the greatest gifts we have from Ron. A Scientologist uses the conditions in every area of his life. Every area. You can apply the conditions to everything you do. If you think about it, no matter what you do, you are always in one of the conditions. The trick is to always know which one you are in and then apply the correct formula. If you do that, you can never lose."

"Thanks," I offered him, grateful for such wisdom from one so young. This was a different way of looking at life. I was going to have to give it some thought. I was beginning to feel like I didn't know anything, and that I had a lot to learn. Scientology was indeed complex.

I returned to course and handed the pink sheet to the Supervisor. She nodded, and I returned to my seat.

"Ready for more TR's?" I looked up to see George standing beside me.

"Sure," I replied, eager to progress on the course.

We went back over to the chairs in the back. To my surprise he handed me a copy of the book Alice in Wonderland. I opened the Training Routines bulletin we had used the day before.

Training Routine 1. Dear Alice.

Purpose: To train the student to deliver a command newly and in a new unit of time to a preclear without flinching or trying to overwhelm or using a via.

Commands: A phrase (with the "he saids" omitted) is picked out of the book Alice in Wonderland and read to the coach. It is repeated until the coach is satisfied it arrived where he is.

"All right," George looked at me brightly. "Start!"

I opened the book and selected a phrase. Then I looked at George and said to him clearly, "Would you tell me please why you are painting those roses?" He was doing TR 0 again, staring intently into my eyes with his serene unblinking stare.

"Good," he answered. "Try another one."

"OK." I turned to another page. "It's my opinion that you never think at all," I said, returning his stare. Why did I feel like such a robot? Was this really the way I was supposed to talk to people? It didn't feel natural.

But I decided to just do the drills and ask questions later. The problem was, later never came.

In the next drill, George read statements out of the book, and I had to acknowledge what he said. "An acknowledgement," I read in the bulletin, "is a method of controlling preclear communication."

"It wasn't very civil of you to sit down without being invited," George repeated to me.

"OK," I answered self consciously.

"What you want to do in this drill," George instructed me, "is to really duplicate what I say to you. You should be able to repeat the phrase to me verbatim. Let your acknowledgement really tell me that you heard me. Like this. Fine! All right! Thank you!" He modelled good acknowledgements for me. I tried it again this time with more confidence.

"I never saw such a house for getting in the way," he said.

"All right," I said firmly.

"Good. Now what did I say?" George quizzed me.

"I never saw such a house for getting in the way," I repeated.

After a few more practice rounds, we went on to the next drill.

The next drill, TR 3, was supposed to teach me to ask a question, get an answer and acknowledge the answer in "one unit of time." The questions to be used were: "Do fish swim?" and "Do birds fly?"

"Do fish swim?" I asked George, trying to maintain my TR 0.

"Well, I'd rather talk about birds," he answered.

Then, following the directions in the bulletin, I said to him gently, "I'll repeat the auditing question. Do fish swim?"

"Oh sure, they swim all the time," he answered.

"Good," I acknowledged, feeling successful.

We practiced this drill and also the next one, TR 4, which was the same except that in this one George was allowed to be even more disruptive.

"Do birds fly?" I asked George. He pretended to be angry and started to get up out of his chair.

"This is stupid. I'm getting out of here," he said as he headed for the door.

Again, following the directions in the bulletin, I got up and physically directed him back to his chair. I had to get an answer to my question by any means. It was up to me to maintain control of the situation.

"Do birds fly?" I asked him again.

"Sure, they fly all the time," he responded agreeably.

"Great!" I delivered the acknowledgement with gusto.

"All right, pass on TR 4," George said approvingly. "That was fine." Now I was ready for the last four TR's which were called the "upper indoc (indoctrination) TR's." These TR's, George told me, were to train me further to maintain control in a session.

In the first drill, I had to direct George around the room using precise commands, and acknowledging him for each action.

The commands to be used were:

Look over at that wall. Thank you.
Walk over to that wall. Thank you.
Touch that wall. Thank you.
Turn around. Thank you.

We did this drill for twenty minutes, until I was starting to feel dizzy. For some reason the repetitive commands were making me sleepy.

In the following drill, the commands were the same, but I had to physically guide George through the required motions. This one was easy, so we completed it quickly.

The next TR was called "Tone 40 on an object." This was a curious drill. "Tone 40," the Scientology dictionary explained, was "a positive postulate with no counter-thought expected, anticipated or anything else, that is, total control."

George sat beside me and put an ashtray in the chair across from me. I read the instructions in the bulletin. Taking the ashtray in my hands, I shouted in the loudest possible voice, "Stand up!" Then I raised the ashtray off the chair and held it in midair. "Thank you," I acknowledged the ashtray. "Sit down on that chair!" I shouted, lowering the ashtray back to the chair. "Thank you!" I shouted again.

"Not loud enough," George looked at me. "I don't feel your total intention. Theoretically, if you do this drill with complete Tone 40, the ashtray will rise by itself off the table. When you give the commands, you can have no other intention than the commands. You're still somewhat self-conscious."

He was right about that. I couldn't believe I was sitting here yelling at an ashtray. But if I had to do it, I was determined to do it well. So I yelled even louder. "Stand up!" I screamed, raising the ashtray off the table. "Sit down on that chair!" My voice was getting hoarse. I lowered the ashtray and looked at George triumphantly. "How was that?"

"If I had been that ashtray, I would have jumped off the chair," he laughed. "OK, pass."

The last TR, TR 9, was called "Tone 40 on a Person," and was similar to the last drill except that I was now to scream the commands at a person. I was to deliver the commands with total Tone 40, giving the other person no choice but to obey my command. I could use physical means to guide him if necessary.

"Walk over to that wall!" I yelled at George.

He just stood there. "I didn't feel Tone 40," he said. "Try it again."

"Walk over to that wall!" I screamed, my face red with effort. I guided him with my hands. He moved over to the wall.

"Thank you!" I acknowledged him.

"Turn around!" I screamed. I tried to channel my complete concentration into the command. He turned around.

"Thank you!" I was getting a headache.

"Sit down in that chair!" I screamed again, my voice getting raspy. "Thank you!"

We continued for a few more commands, then George mercifully gave me a pass on the drill.

We were just in time for lunch.

"You are making splendid progress," George complimented me. "You will be auditing in no time."

"I guess that's what it's all about, right?" I still had a headache from all the yelling. I would have asked for an aspirin, but I remember reading a list of rules on the wall that said that any medication, including aspirin, was strictly forbidden while on the course.

I headed next door for lunch. "Curiouser and curiouser," I thought, remembering a line from Alice in Wonderland. For a moment I had the feeling that I was on as strange a journey as the Alice in the book. There was a surreal quality to the past two days.

Did I suspect, even for a minute, that the seemingly innocuous TR's I was doing, supposedly to train me to become a better auditor, were actually a series of extremely sophisticated hypnotic and control techniques that would eventually lead me into a state of unthinking obedience and robotic response?

That I was unwittingly, drill by drill, surrendering my mind and my will to the whims of this bizarre organization, an organization to which I would become increasingly enslaved as the days and years passed by?

Is it possible that a sophisticated system of mind control, masquerading as religion, does in fact exist in this country outside the control and wisdom of the courts and the laws of the land?

Was I being lured into spiritual, physical, emotional and mental bondage without my knowledge or consent?

I had in fact, with complete innocence and trust, sold myself into a subtle slavery, slavery from which I would emerge years later raped of my mind, my emotions, my soul, my finances, and twelve years of my life. Yet no laws existed to protect my freedom. Psychological kidnapping is not illegal. Is it possible for one's mind to be completely controlled by another?

The answer is yes.

During those sunny days in October, a part of me was dying, my mind and my soul being sucked out by the greedy vampire called Scientology. I was not to exist as myself for another twelve years.

Reading this makes me weep !

"One psychiatrist has asserted that Hubbard reversed therapies used to reduce obsession, so creating obsessive disorders."

So crazy,so mad, so delusional. They live among us.Like something out of a nightmare.

Reading about L.Ron Hubbard and Scientology has give me such a major gratitude list. I am so happy to be able to see the world through relatively un-scarred eyes.

THE DESTRUCTIVE EFFECTS OF SCIENTOLOGY

As the Wollersheim case demonstrated, Scientology "auditing" can have a profoundly destructive effect After a survey of 48 groups, Conway and Siegelman reported that former Scientologists had the highest rate of violent outbursts, hallucinations, sexual dysfunction and suicidal tendencies. They estimated that full recovery from Scientology averaged at 12.5 years.

Members are entirely saturated with Hubbard's delusional and unscientific view of the universe. They come to see themselves as part of a small elite, harassed on all sides by a gigantic conspiracy. Scientologists speak and think in an elaborate language created by Hubbard (Scientology dictionaries run to over 1,000 pages of definitions). They are drilled to present a calm, cheerful appearance, whatever their real feelings. Most become "auditing junkies", unable to face life without regular "sessions". All aspects of the individual's life are invaded, as Hubbard held forth on almost every subject from business management to child rearing.

Scientology induces a phobic reaction towards mental health practitioners, so ex-members are usually unwilling to seek professional help in untangling themselves. This situation is compounded by the inability of most mental health practitioners to understand the cult experience. So most former Scientologists drift into other cult groups, or derivatives of Scientology such as est (the Forum or Landmark), Avatar, Dianasis, Re-Evaluation Co-Counselling, or Idenics.

Mental Health practitioners who have had contact with former Scientologists have diagnosed their condition as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. One psychiatrist has asserted that Hubbard reversed therapies used to reduce obsession, so creating obsessive disorders. Former members report a high incidence of Chronic Fatigue Disorder a lack of motivation and energy. However, as yet no research has been undertaken to confirm these reports.

MANIPULATION

A stunning window on the inner workings of cult mind control and the mechanisms of brainwashing. The man was a horrible cruel genius. L.Ron Hubbard was a depraved drug addict and sodomite.

21 MANIPULATION

"When somebody enrols, consider he or she has joined up for the duration of the universe - never permit an `open-minded' approach ... If they enrolled, they're aboard, and if they're aboard they're here on the same terms as the rest of us - win or die in the attempt. Never let them be half minded about being Scientologists ... When Mrs. Pattycake comes to us to be taught, turn that wandering doubt in her eye into a fixed, dedicated glare .. The proper instruction attitude is ". . We'd rather have you dead than incapable. "' - L. Ron Hubbard, Keeping Scientology Working, 7 February 1965, reissued 27 August 1980.

Hubbard claimed to have studied hypnosis from his teens onwards. At the outset, he admitted that his Dianetic "research" was done using deep trance hypnosis. In the early days, he also admitted that the Dianetic procedure could be trance inducing. The term "hypnosis" has aroused much controversy. Probably the most exacting conceptual framework was made by hypnotherapist Milton Erickson, who asserted that hypnosis is an interaction between people which accesses altered states of consciousness.

Contemporary psychology accepts that most mental processes occur below consciousness. A hypnotherapist accesses the unconscious in an attempt to place beneficial suggestions therein which will have the same motivating force upon the individual as his or her own decisions. In hypnotherapy, the client gives permission for this process to occur. In Scientology, the process occurs without consent.

Hubbard asserted that everything that exists is a product of consciousness: Reality is agreement", "the universe is an agreed upon apparency". From this perspective, Scientology seeks to change the individual's perception of reality, and replace it with Hubbard's notions, at the same time pretending that the individual is becoming more aware, and more "self-determined". Scientology claims to be scientific, but factually, it is impossible to undertake "auditing" without submitting to beliefs which have not been scientifically validated, such as reincarnation, possession by spirits (or body thetans) and the existence and influence of "engrams".

Restrictions are put upon Scientologists to prevent them reaching a critical understanding of Scientology. Explanation of Hubbard's work is forbidden; the materials must be quoted exactly. Dissent from the materials is also forbidden then Scientologist's "realisations" in counselling must align with Hubbard's pronouncements about the nature of reality. Any disagreement with Hubbard or his teachings will lead the individual to the "Ethics Office", a department of Scientology's internal police force.

The Scientologist may not talk about his "case" or problems other than to his or her auditor, thus inhibiting close relationships. The "technology" of Scientology is and always has been right (even when Hubbard changed it every few months), and failure to achieve spectacular success (i.e., euphoric states) is always considered to be the fault of either the auditor or the preclear, never of the techniques. Scientologists are led to believe that criticism (unless made by Hubbard) always stems from guilt about one's own transgressions. The individual's attention is focused inwards and so deflected from consideration of Hubbard's or Scientology's faults.

Scientology procedures are comparable with those of hypnotherapy. In Training Routine 0, two people are supposed to sit looking at each other "for some hours". Visual fixation has long been accepted as a means of inducing altered or trance states. Repetition is another method of induction, and Hubbard admitted that a number of his procedures are mindnumbingly monotonous. It is possible in Scientology to sit for several hours answering the same single line question, the wording never varied, such as "From where could you communicate to a victim?"

Eventually, the individual's entire perception and belief system is over-ridden by Scientology. The Scientologist may not talk about the Operating Thetan levels, so is separated from most of humanity, believing malevolent spirits to be the real cause of all disability and conflict. Scientologists do not accept any other perception of reality than Hubbard's. Hubbard derided hypnotherapy, psychology, analysis, meditation and religious counselling, claiming that Scientology is the only effective system.

Staff members, especially those in the Sea Organization, become even more suggestible through long working hours, sleep deprivation, poor diet and regular doses of the Rehabilitation Project Force.

The Total Freedom Trap:
Scientology, Dianetics And L. Ron Hubbard
by Jon Atack

"Scientology is evil; its techniques evil !"

I have found the writings from ex-Scientologists absolutely a fascinating read. The incredible refinement of brainwashing techniques and the example of their effectiveness is quite chilling, the results hideous and yet almost impossible to put down.

The Total Freedom Trap:
Scientology, Dianetics And L. Ron Hubbard
by Jon Atack

Excerpt:

13 TECHNIQUES

"Scientology is evil; its techniques evil; its practice a serious threat to the community; medically, morally and socially." -Report of the Board of Inquiry into Scientology for the state of Victoria, Australia, 1965.

While the basic ideas of Scientology had nearly all been expressed W by the end of 1952, Hubbard continued to pour out new techniques that were "guaranteed" to cure all human ills. He borrowed from many forms of therapy and meditation to create an elaborate "Bridge" which he claimed led to "total freedom".

Scientology indoctrination usually begins with the Communication Course Training Routines or `"TRs". These are supposed to enhance the ability to communicate, but have been called by one expert "the most overt form of hypnosis used by any destructive cult".

In the first TR, two people sit silently facing each other, with their eyes closed. In the second, they stare at each other, sometimes for hours on end, inducing hallucinations and an uncritical euphoria.

In the next stage, TR-0 Bullbait, the student has to sit motionless, while the "coach" does everything possible to disturb him or her. The student progresses to reading aloud disconnected phrases from Alice in Wonderland, and then to acknowledging statements read out at random from the same text. Then comes TR-3, where the student repeatedly asks the coach either "Do fish swim?" or "Do birds fly?". In the last "Communication Course" Training Routine, the student again asks one of these questions repeatedly, learning not to be distracted by anything the coach says or does.

Repetition is another way of inducing an altered or trance state. Following these procedures definitely makes the individual more susceptible to direction from Scientology.

From the Communication Course, the new recruit will usually go onto the "Purification Rundown", after a meeting with a Scientology salesperson, who convinces the recruit that the Rundown is well worth the high price demanded for it. Those on the "Purification Rundown" take extremely high doses of vitamins and minerals, and combine running and sauna treatment for five hours each day. Such high doses of vitamins can create various physiological reactions, including drug-like experiences. Hubbard attributed these reactions to stored drugs and pollutants being removed from the body. He even made the ridiculous claim that LSD lodges in fatty tissue. As LSD is both highly unstable and water soluble, this is impossible, but it shows Hubbard's usual scientific ignorance. The heat exhaustion brought on by the sauna can lead to euphoric experiences, yet again weakening critical thinking.

The sequence of steps on the Scientology Bridge has changed from one year to the next. After the "Purification Rundown' - and another interview with a salesperson-the recruit might well go on to the "Hubbard Key to Life Course" (at a cost of £4,000 or $8,000). This supposedly undercuts all previous education by returning the individual to the basics of literacy. Factually, because it treats all clients as pre-school children, it tends to cause age regression, making people yet more susceptible to Scientology.

From the "Hubbard Key to Life Course," the individual moves on to the "Hubbard Life Orientation Course" and thence to the "Objective Processes."

There are several hundred Scientology counselling procedures or "auditing processes". The "Objectives" were first introduced in the 1950s. Hubbard asserted that it is necessary to show the individual that reactive impulses can be controlled by being put under the control of another person (the Scientology "auditor"). This might be more simply termed "mind control". On the Objective Processes, the individual is given strict orders to repeat an overwhelmingly tedious cycle of behaviour.

In "Opening Procedure by Duplication", for example, the auditor and the client or "pre-clear" are alone in a room with a table at either end. On one table is a book, on the other a bottle. The preclear will be instructed, with unvarying wording, to look at the object at the other side of the room, to walk over to it, to pick it up and to identify its colour, weight and temperature. Sessions often run to two hours, and cases of 18 such sessions for this single "process" are not unheard of. Eventually, this arduous ritual leads to a sensation of floating, believed to be "exteriorisation from the body" in Scientology-but a common side effect of hypnotic trance. The Scientology Bridge is laid out in a series of steps, or grades, each with a purported result. On Grade Zero, for example, clients are meant to achieve the ability to "communicate freely with anyone on any subject". A Grade One "release" is supposedly without problems.

In 1959, Hubbard introduced "security checking", where Scientologists are interrogated, having to answer long, prepared lists of questions about their moral transgressions. The E-meter is used as a lie detector throughout these "sessions". A careful record is kept of all confessions, and this has proved to be a highly effective means of silencing dissidents.

This procedure, renamed "integrity processing", using exactly the same lists of questions as the earlier "security checks", finds a place on Grade ' Two, and is frequently repeated beyond it (at a cost ranging from £130 to £260, or $250 to $500, per hour). Scientology presumes that any of its members might become a security risk at any time. There is justification for this suspicion, as thousands have left the movement, including many leading lights.

There are two further release grades, before the "preclear' starts on the current form of Dianetic auditing. In New Era Dianetics, the preclear is asked to re-experience incidents from "past lives", which can lead to strange delusions on the part of Scientologists, compensating for the shortcomings of their real lives. Through Dianetics, preclears are supposed at last to become Clear, with the realization that they no longer need their "Reactive minds", where engrams are supposedly stored.

Once "Clear", they are ready for the Advanced Courses of Scientology, the "Operating Thetan" or "OT" levels.

HOW TO TALK TO A SCIENTOLOGIST.

I think people are interested in why a Scientologist stays one and why some leave, so I thought I would talk to you about it.

I was a Scientologist for 27 years. I gave them over two hundred thousand dollars of my own money. In fact, until earlier this year I still considered myself a Scientologist.

There is a lot of information that Scientology is destructive. Scientology has had to pay out millions of dollars to people they have harmed. Yet, as you may know, it is almost impossible to talk about these things with a dedicated Scientologist. I hope to give you some clues.

You might wonder how I decided to leave. After all, my parents tried to talk me out of it. My sister tried to talk me out of it. My friends tried to talk me out of it. None succeeded.

I wouldn’t listen to anyone who tried to dissuade me from Scientology. I kept myself from reading critical news articles or viewing television shows. I never read critical books. I thought it was all lies anyway. I would have defended Scientology
to the death.

So there are a few things you don’t want to do when taking to a Scientologist.

Don’t talk to them about the weird stuff. Most Scientologists don’t know about it and are trained in the idea that finding out about it too soon will kill them. So just leave that entirely alone. It may freak you out and you may want to share it, but they will think it is a personal attack.

Don’t tell them it is not a religion. A Scientologist will instantly tune you out the moment you say that. After all they have subjective experience that is to them completely spiritual and religious in nature. To assert it isn’t is to be calling them a liar and denying their own experience.

Scientologists invest a lot of their life and almost all their money in pursuit of the Scientology total freedom. I want you to understand that. Take myself as an example. Almost all my friends were Scientologists. Almost all my money went to Scientology. Up to 20 hours a week were spent at the church studying or getting counseling, even when I had a full time job. My whole life centered around Scientology and I wasn’t even a staff member. For a staff member it becomes all consuming.

I felt that Scientology had saved my life. That I would otherwise have destroyed myself with drugs or suicide. I felt I had experienced personal insight into the nature of my own being through Scientology. It explained everything to me.

To tell me it isn’t a religion runs counter to my belief, but more importantly, it runs counter to my investment. If it is not a religion, then what did I do with my two hundred thousand dollars and my 27 years of association and all those hours of study and counseling? I would have to admit that waste and I’m not going to do that just because you state, "It’s not a religion."

Don’t tell them Hubbard was a con-man and a fraud and a bigamist and that almost nothing he said about himself was true. A Scientologist can’t believe that because he has been told that such statements are all lies. That the documents that show these things are fabrications by a shadowy conspiracy to destroy L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology and thus deny people the total freedom Scientology offers.

You’re in a he-said she-said situation. In fact, without careful research you might be presenting false information that the church has put on the ‘net just so they can show their members how false it all is. So a Scientologist will be sure you are now a tool of the conspiracy, out to destroy Scientology. And they will not listen.

Don’t tell them Scientology doesn’t work. For a Scientologist, it does work. They know it. They will be able to point out one or many times where they had a success or it helped them through something or they felt better about themselves. They may have past life memories that convince them of their spiritual nature. They can have experienced wonderful things.

In fact, I still feel that some things in Scientology help. It is one of the hardest things to get over and understand and I am still coping with it. Because a lot of the writing that Hubbard did appeals to one’s better nature, to the idea of helping people, of attaining one’s dreams. It is very seductive and if you have any success at it, you will attribute it to Scientology.

But I’ve been doing some research. And one book is a book called "Hypnotism" written by G.H. Estabrooks in 1943. In chapter three he says: "There is a rule in Hypnotism that everything we get in a trance can also be obtained by means of the posthypnotic suggestion. Also that anything we find in either can be found in autosuggestion..."

So I am coming to believe that almost everything that occurs in Scientology that a Scientologist experiences and believes in comes about as the self-suggested result of a kind of auto-hypnosis. Everything that seems to work or be positive is attributed to Scientology, and everything negative is assigned to personal failure or lack of understanding of Scientology. After which there is a long bout of study to correct the matter, which again is a kind of auto-hypnosis.

And any outside challenge to that carefully maintained trance will result in greater and greater resistance.

So how Do you talk to a Scientologist?

First, you have to care. You have to care for them. Regardless of what you think about what they believe or do, you have to care.

Throw out any bigotry or intolerance you might have and be a caring person. Listen to them. Assure them you only want good things for them. Give them a safe place to visit or come to.

Many times Scientologists won’t leave the church even though they want to, if they have no safe place or people of unconditional trust to go to.

It is a huge personal event to leave Scientology. You have to somehow come to the decision you were wrong and all that money and time and investment is lost. You have to be willing to lose your friends, maybe even a husband or wife or children. Few people can do that when others are telling them they were wrong. And really, what a person has hypnotized himself into can only be undone by himself.

Tell them that if they want to come and see you, just call and you’ll pay their way. Don’t say "leave the church", say "come and see me." If they call, send them an airplane ticket or go pick them up. And when they show up on your door step, don’t be surprised, be supportive. Don’t eagerly use their leaving to present them with stacks of information critical of Scientology. You can ask them about it, but they have a lot to think about. It can take some time. Give them space. Let them ask for information or let them use the internet to find out for themselves.

If they want to talk, get them talking about it. Have them tell you their experiences, good and bad. Talking helps, especially when the person listening is nonjudgmental.

It is the internal conflicts I experienced within Scientology that broke the spell for me. So if I were now talking to a Scientologist, I would talk to them about these things:

Get them to explain about the powers of an operating thetan, the higher levels in Scientology. And then ask them if they knew of people on those levels getting sick or getting cancer or dying or just leaving the church. Get them to think how the reality they observe differs from what is promised. Even for people who have been in Scientology for years. Tell them you are confused; if these magnificent powers existed, how then could critics of the church continue to write or even to exist? Couldn’t a top level Scientologist just wish them away?

Get them to describe the ideals of Scientology ethics and justice and how Scientologists are supposed to be honest and straightforward. Find out if they know any Scientologists who won’t pay back loans, who have trouble with paying their rent, who have done a lot of Scientology but still seem shady or involved in schemes. If they have been around awhile, they will know some or will have heard of many such things.

Get them to explain "having to have before you can do" and have them tell you about what Scientologists are told they need to do to before management releases the next "O.T." levels. Then wonder, if it is so important that these levels be done to ensure the hope of the future, why are there things that have to be done first?

Find out if they experienced the misapplication of Scientology justice themselves. Get them to talk about it.

Find out what they think about Hubbard’s writings being revised over 15 years after his death. Does it make sense to them?

See if they will talk about their feelings that it is "just them" having trouble, but that Scientology really is good. It is very common for people to go for decades wondering privately why they are not getting the promised gains from Scientology while outwardly defending it to the death.

These kinds of questions and getting them to think about what they experienced and observed as compared to what they are taught and led to believe are a key to breaking the kind of spell they are under.

So, I think that you should talk with a Scientologist completely nonjudgmentally. Get them to talk about what they have observed themselves in fellow Scientologists, organizations, management and activities as compared to what they are given to believe from Hubbard’s writings and the promises of management. This way you open the door far enough that they will begin to read and compare the stories and experiences of ex-Scientologists with their own.

Once that happens, you can help them. But don’t push it on them. And then by reading actual documents such as Hubbard’s death certificate and the coroner’s report and toxic screen, the depositions in court testimony, police reports in the Lisa McPherson case, etc., they can begin to form a picture of what they were prevented from knowing. And choose.

So how do you talk to a Scientologist? With care and understanding. They found a reason to be in it. Give them the space and time and resources to find a reason to be out of it.

Evil Scientology

L. Ron Hubbard. Ultimate Evil. Scientology is a dangerous cult. Beware !

Some great facts and Info on the cult of Scientology. L.Ron Hubbard was a brilliant madman, crappy scifi writer, flimflam artist and Social Engineering Genius. The church is a cult, and manipulates anyone who joins with classic brain washing and mind control techniques. Hubbard invented his 'mandate from Heaven' in a drug and rum fugue state, calling the event, 'the wall of fire' and writing out a document called OIII.

OT III Course, summary and comments
In OT 3,

OPERATING THETAN
Section Three

Hubbard explains his cosmology and the ins & outs of 'body thetans'. I will try to summarize it, because my lawyer, after having finally having seen evidence handed over to him on behalf of RTC, has advised me that including the full text is at this time against my interests. So be it. I therefore will give you this summary, interspersed with comments. Your comments are kindly invited. Please correct any errors and tell me about any information that I may have missed. Page numbers refer to the version of OT 3 as given in the Fishman Affidavit.

The following portion of OT 3 is quoted in full in Margery Wakefield's book The Road to Xenu, chapter 13, and I believe all of it has been quoted in other books and articles as well. It provides a nice context for my summary and comments:

The head of the Galactic Federation (76 planets around larger
stars visible from here) (founded 95,000,000 years ago, very
space opera) solved overpopulation (250 billion or so per planet,
178 billion on average) by mass implanting. He caused people to
be brought to Teegeeack (Earth) and put an H-Bomb on the
principal volcanos (Incident II) and then the Pacific area ones
were taken in boxes to Hawaii and the Atlantic area ones to
Las Palmas and there "packaged".

His name was Xenu. He used renegades. Various misleading
data by means of circuits etc. was placed in the implants.

When through with his crime loyal officers (to the people)
captured him after six years of battle and put him in an
electronic mountain trap where he still is. "They" are gone.
The place (Confederation) has since been a desert. The length
and brutality of it all was such that this Confederation never
recovered. The implant is calculated to kill (by pneumonia etc)
anyone who attempts to solve it. This liability has been
dispensed with by my tech development.

One can freewheel through the implant and die unless it is
approached as precisely outlined. The "freewheel" (auto-running
on and on) lasts too long, denies sleep etc and one dies. So be
careful to do only Incidents I and II as given and not plow
around and fail to complete one thetan at a time.

In December 1967 I knew someone had to take the plunge. I did
and emerged very knocked out, but alive. Probably the only one
ever to do so in 75,000,000 years. I have all the data now, but
only that given here is needful.

One's body is a mass of individual thetans stuck to oneself or
to the body.

One has to clean them off by running incident II and Incident I.
It is a long job, requiring care, patience and good auditing.
You are running beings. They respond like any preclear. Some
large, some small.

Thetans believed they were one. This is the primary error.
Good luck.

(p. 76-77) Well, lots of things to dissect and discuss here, and perhaps even more things that need some elucidation before we can even begin to understand what Hubbard says in this rather strange and condensed tidbit.

But before we start, I believe it may be useful to first explain some more about Scientology's basic beliefs; otherwise it's difficult to make head or tails of the quote.

Jon Atack, who once was a member of Scientology and who has in fact completed OT 3 before he became a very effective critic of the cult, has provided us with a very useful analysis, OT 3 rewritten for beginners. Here's what Jon says:

Scientologists believe that they have reincarnated from before the beginning of time. They believe that many interplanetary civilizations have existed. Hubbard restyled the spirit the "thetan". Before the beginning of time, thetans existed, separate from one another (thetans were not created; they have existed for all time and indeed precede the creation of time). With the creation of energy and matter, thetans have gradually become trapped. The principal method of entrapment is through "implanting", where the thetan is hypnotised and given positive suggestions which limit its powers. This process, according to Hubbard has been going on in this universe for four quadrillion years (4,000,000,000,000,000, rather than the mere 8-20,000,000 held by astrophysicists). However, this is just one universe in a series of several.
Scientology seeks to return the thetan's power by stripping away implants and using drills to heighten extrasensory perception and ability. The goal of these procedures is an "operating thetan" - a being who can act independently of his physical body, and can cause physical events to occur through sheer force of will. The "operating thetan" would be capable of dismissing illness and psychological disorder in others at will.

Now that we know that, let's go through it again. Here's how the story start:

The head of the Galactic Federation (76 planets around larger
stars visible from here) (founded 95,000,000 years ago, very
space opera) solved overpopulation (250 billion or so per planet,
178 billion on average) by mass implanting. He caused people to
be brought to Teegeeack (Earth) and put an H-Bomb on the
principal volcanos (Incident II) and then the Pacific area ones
were taken in boxes to Hawaii and the Atlantic area ones to
Las Palmas and there "packaged".

(p. 77) Hubbard believes in various universes, an idea that has been explored in sci-fi under the name of 'parallel universes'. Hubbard postulates that 95 million years ago, in our particular universe, a Galactic Federation was founded. There are, according to him, seventy-six planets that have gained membership to it. Sure bigger than the United Nations, and very space-opera indeed.

According to Hubbard, earth was once part of this Federation. It suffered from severe overpopulation; an average 178 billion people per planet is indeed rather crowded. The head of the Federation, whose name is later on to be revealed as 'Xenu', although some people think it's 'Xemu' (Hubbard's handwriting is spidery, and thus easy to misread) took draconian measures to reduce the number of inhabitants. Xenu transported the lot of them to earth, then referred to as 'Teegeeack'. After transportation, Xenu used hydrogen bombs on various volcanos and thereby wiped out all these people. Very effective indeed. He then proceeded to carry off their souls/spirits or 'thetans' and 'implanted' those. This episode - the transport, the bombing, the implanting - was labelled 'Incident II' by Hubbard.

In the other universes, other things happened. All thetans on this planet and on twenty-one nearby stars have Incident II and 'R6' in common. Hubbard refers to these twenty-two planets as 'the Confederation'.

It might be worth mentioning here that the Sea Org's insigna carries twenty-two stars. The number of stars is surely not chosen haphazardly: the insigna is obviously intended to be a symbol of this confederation that had to 'suffer' Incident II.

The other planets within the Galactic Federation - there were seventy-six of them, Hubbard says - supposedly have their own version of Incident II. And other universes - remember, Hubbard believed in parallel universes - would probably have other versions of Incident II as well. But what all universes have in common, according to Hubbard, is Incident I. He describes it in just a few lines and obviously didn't give the matter much thought, or perhaps he didn't dare 'to take the plunge' into this one. Hubbard doesn't say how much time this incident took, nor does he locate it. He's also noteably silent upon what happened in between Incident I and II, if I may say so.

Incident I
Occurs at start of track (4 quadrillion years ago).
LOUD SNAP
WAVES OF LIGHT
CHARIOT COMES OUT, TURNS RIGHT AND LEFT
CHERUB COMES OUT
BLOWS HORN, COMES CLOSE
SHATTERING SERIES OF SNAPS
CHERUB FADES BACK (RETREATS)
BLACKNESS DUMPED ON THETAN

(p. 99-100) Judging by this, I don't think Hubbard supported either the Bing Bang or the Expanding Universe-theory in his private cosmology, although both make much more sense than his. Let's lable this one the Snap Story. We have here an undecisive cherub, who doesn't know whether to turn left or right and who comes out twice without ever retreating; and we have horns. A bit angelic for somebody who, as we shall see later, believed that Christ was an implant.

Let's turn to Incident II, which allegedly happened 75 million years ago and occurred on earth:

Incident II is over 36 days long. Capture on other planets
was weeks or months before the implant. Those on Teegeeack
(Earth) were just blown up except for Loyal officers who
were (shortly before the explosion on Earth) rounded up.

(p. 79) So Xenu captured everybody who did not live on earth, held them imprisoned for a few weeks or sometimes even months, and then transported them to earth and mixed them with the rest, that is: the people who did live there. He then proceeded to nuke the lot. Just a few loyal officers escaped this major hydrogen bombing. Judging from this excerpt, it would seem that Hubbard conjures that loyal officers were only to be found on earth. That's exobiotist, I think... I also wonder where they went?

Incident II is described in greater detail. Here's the 'sequence':

H-BOMB DROPPED ON VOLCNO
EXPLOSION
TERRIFIC WINDS
THETAN CARRIED OVER PEAK
ELECTRONIC RIBBON CAME UP
HE STUCK TO IT
IT WAS THEN PULLED DOWN AND HE WAS (AS PART OF A GROUP)
IMPLANTED WITH R6
PICTURE OF PILOT SAYING HE IS MOCKING IT UP

(p. 99) Every bit as cryptic, but at least he elaborates on it throughout OT 3. The bit about the thetan, the soul or spirit of a nuked-out guy, getting stuck to an electric ribbon surely reflects Margery Wakefield's comparison of them to insects: upon hearing for the first time about body thetans, she said they sounded like flees. Based on this description, I'd vote for flies.

Another nicety is the pilot mentioned in the last part of the sequence. Sounds like the ending of a bad horror movie: 'T was all a dream... But although 'mocking something up' usually means 'imagining it', in Scieno-lingo it means more than a mental picture; it is supposedly a self-created object; it is a thing which one can be. Operating Thetans are, again supposedly, able to 'mock up' a picture that has dimensions and location in space and time.

After the bombing, the thetans were 'implanted'. Hubbard decribes the 'sequence' of the 'implant' thus:

(1) capture (being shot),
(2) freezing,
(3) transport to Teegeeack (sometimes via a relay point),
(4) being placed near a volcano,
(5) beginning implant up to "the pilot",
(6) various picture sequences,
(7) the 7s and C.C. and OT II materials,
(8) 36 days of picture implants which give a vast array of
materials and three explanations for the bombing,
(9) transport to Hawaii or Las Palmas for packaging up into
clusters.
The pictures contain God, the Devil, angels, space opera,
theaters, helicopters, a constant spinning, a spinning dancer,
trains and various scenes very like modern England. You name it,
it's in this implant we call in its entirely "R6".

(p. 80). Jon Atack gives some more details than I've been able to find in the Fishman-version of OT 3. For instance, he explains how the thetans were transported, according to Hubbard:

The people were killed and the thetans (or spirits) gathered, frozen in a mixture of glycol and alcohol, and brought to Earth where they were placed near volcanoes which were exploded with hydrogen bombs. The thetans were gathered on "electronic ribbons", packaged together as clusters and given 36 days of implanting, to render them servile and incapable of decision.

So what happens is that they're caught, transported, nuked, get implanted up to a certain point (the pilot saying it was all mocked up) and then get fed pictures. They're also given the '7s' (a set of supposed implants, and for the life of me, I don't know which; I don't know if Hubbard does, either. He does not further describe it in OT 3). 'C.C.' is the clearing course, the courses Scientologist have to finish before they are allowed to do the OT's. It strikes me as rather funny that Hubbard says they were fed OT 2 as well: something is coming full circle here. I think it helps Scientologist to relate to these poor imprisoned inoperate thetans: after all, it means they're at the same point in their studies. After they're fed OT 2, it's movie-time again. Thirty six days, no less! Then they're transported again and delivered at the volcanos.

What strikes me as odd, is that in the description of Incident II itself the thetans get to be implanted before they encounter this pilot who says it's all mocked up; but during this implant, they are "implanted up to 'the pilot'". Mirrors in mirrors here... The gist of the implanting, as per Hubbard, are pictures of theaters, trains, helicopters, and modern British life. Pictures of God and the devil are part of it, Hubbard says here. This of course is a statement highly objectionable to those who adhere to Christianity. Elsewhere Hubbard happens to mention that Christ was part of the implant too.

'R6' is short for the 'reactive mind', i.e. the whole of the implant during OT 3. The 'reactive mind' is also being referred to as 'bank' (short for: memory bank).

Hubbard repeatedly states that this is all 'fact'. Fact, not fiction. But he obviously chose to ignore a few harder facts, and his story is in flagrant contradiction with, for instance, geology. In Jon Atack's words:

OT 3 is of course in substantial disagreement with conventional geology. Geologists hold that almost all of the volcanoes listed by Hubbard and both Hawaii and Los Palmas came into being far more recently than 75 million years ago. On a simple point of logic, it seems strange that none of these volcanoes was damaged by the explosion of the hydrogen bombs.

One of these scientific refutations may be found on my homepage: Peter Fordes Scientific Scrutiny of OT 3. Hubbard's 'facts' flunk on astrophysics: our universe is much younger that he believes it to be. So be well advised and take Hubbard's story as fiction rather than fact.

There's another confusing paragraph:

His name was Xenu. He used renegades. Various misleading
data by means of circuits etc. was placed in the implants.

(p. 76) Ahhh, here we have the first occurence of the name of the Beast, sometimes also referred to as 'the Dark Prince': Xenu. The name 'Xenu' is shunned by most Scientologist: they will not speak it, and try to prevent others from reading it. (There's this one guy on a.r.s. who carefully edits 'Xenu' out of the name of Steven Fishman's account any time he replies to Fishman: he changes it into zenu@ix.netcom.com instead. Rather funny, in fact.) Or Scientologists will pretend they've never heard of Xenu, in adherence with their belief that OT 3 is very secret and must not revealed to or be discussed with anybody whatsoever.

So Xenu availed himself of renegades to carry out his devillish plot. But renegades of what? Xenu was the leader of the Galactic Federation, according to Ron, wasn't he? So if they were renegades, you would hardly expect them to plot with Xenu, but rather against, wouldn't you? It doesn't make sense. Even fiction needs a coherent plot and should not mess up details.

The next sentence deals with the content of the 'implants'. According to Hubbard, implants are 'false memories', a kind of post-hypnotic suggestion. Here he describes them as 'misleading data'. Hubbard explains that Xenu and his renegades used 'circuits' to place this misleading data in the populace. It's a shame he doesn't give more details. He was a sci-fi writer, wasn't he? So surely he should have been able to come up with something. Now I can't help but think of this movie of Johnnie Mnemonic and hismemory bank...

(p. 76) Loyal officers - that is: loyal to the people, but I think that from Xenu's point of view we would have the real renegades here, considering what's up next - some officers captured Xenu after his frightful misdeeds. It was not an easy catch: it took six years of battle. These officers then proceeded by caging Xenu in and trapping him in a mountain on one of the Federation's planets. Hubbard believes that Xenu is still there, supposedly alive. According to Hubbard, the place where all this happened has suffered severly and is still bare.

Hubbard turns to the implant now. It is allegedly deadly: 'calculated to kill (by pneumonia etc)', but he quickly ensures his readers that he himself has developed the tech to deal with that, and render the implant harmless.

One can freewheel through the implant and die unless it is
approached as precisely outlined. The "freewheel" (auto-running
on and on) lasts too long, denies sleep etc and one dies. So be
careful to do only Incidents I and II as given and not plow
around and fail to complete one thetan at a time.

(p. 76-77) Now it's becoming complicated. Untill now, this was just a nice sci-fi story starring evil princes, but now we'll get entangled in Scieno-speak: lots of lingo to come. Hubbard here explains his followers how to deal with the implants placed in us in Incident I and II. Remember, Scientologists 'run' things. They 'run' a routine, for instance, or a procedure. 'Running' means: going over a memory or following an auditing procedure. You can also 'overrun' something, meaning that you take a routine or prcedure beyond the end of an auditing process. To put it simply, when you 'overrun' something, you didn't stop in time. I take it that 'auto-running' is meant to denote that a procedure or routine takes off by itself, and just goes 'on and on'. 'Freewheeling' must be akin to running in circles at perpetuum. Hubbard believes that it will kill a person.

But what about this: 'fail to complete one thetan at a time'. I take it that that's a body thetan. But how do you 'take' them? I think I need help on this. Jon?

On OT 3, the individual finds "body thetans" by locating any sensation of pressure or mass in his or her body. This is addressed "telepathically" as a cluster, and taken through the cluster-making incident of 75 million years ago. Once this is done, the individual body thetans should be available to be taken through either the same incident or through incident one. (...) According to OT 3, everyone on Earth is in fact a collection of such clusters (Hubbard says that each person doing OT 3 will find "hundreds" of body thetans - many victims of this course believe that they find millions).

Thanks, Jon. So one needs to take all one's body thetans through one of these Incidents, one by one. Sounds like a lot of work indeed.

In December 1967 I knew someone had to take the plunge. I did
and emerged very knocked out, but alive. Probably the only one
ever to do so in 75,000,000 years. I have all the data now, but
only that given here is needful.

(p. 77) Oh-wee! Hubbard dived straight into the implant! The first one to do so in 75 million years! Such a shame that he does not give 'all the data' but holds back on us. Now he's dead and we'll never know all the details of his space soap opera. Oh well. Star Wars is still being televised. At least Hubbard had the grace to explain about these body thetans of his:

One's body is a mass of individual thetans stuck to oneself or
to the body.

(p. 77) So we are made up of this 'mass of individual thetans' that are stuck to us. Yuk. And they can form clusters too! "A cluster is a group of body thetans crushed or hold together by some mutual bad experience," that's what I read somewhere. I bet the mutual bad experience is either Incident I or Incident II.

One has to clean them off by running incident II and Incident I.
It is a long job, requiring care, patience and good auditing.
You are running beings. They respond like any preclear. Some
large, some small.

(p. 77) See? I was right. But 'running beings'? I guess it's following processes not unlike those the pre-clear use when they're 'running an engram', the difference being that they now 'run body thetans'. And the body thetans behave like pre-clears. Hmm, do they have to hand in stats too?

Thetans believed they were one. This is the primary error.
Good luck.

(p. 77). 'Primary error', sounds like 'primary sin'. And these Scientologist believe all that? Wow. And gee, thanks for the good wishes. I think that the Scientologist who has just started on OT 3 and has just read all this, could use them. Quite a few of them took a real fright, I've gathered. And what exactly happens to the body thetan when you get rid of it? Does it jump on somebody else? No, they don't, Hubbbard says. It's explaned a bit further in the text.

Body Thetans are just Thetans. When you get rid of one he
goes off and possibly squares around, picks up a body or
admires daisies. He is in fact a sort of cleared Being. He
cannot fail to eventually, if not at once, regain many
abilities. Many have been asleep for the last 75,000,000
years. A Body Thetan responds to any process any Thetan
responds to.

(p. 78) Many body thetans 'have been asleep for the last 75 million years'? They sure outdo Sleeping Beauty! And when the Scientologist has rid himself of one of these body thetans, the little thingies may pick up a body of their own. They even like daisies! Where's all the sci-fi gone, I wonder, and the horror?

So what the Scientologist needs to do, is audit all these body thetans, that is: lead them through Incident II, and perhaps I. Then they'll be off. Every body thetan has to be processed individually. I couldn't find a reference as to their numbers. There might be hundreds; could be more, could be less. If you find none, Hubbard says, one needs to go back to some basic courses and perhaps file for a 'Review', that is, a serious talk with one's supervisor, because finding no body thetans is out of the question.

In a chapter called 'The Basic on BT's', Hubbard goes on to explain that body thetans tend to stick together. They form 'clusters' by collision; they keep a picture of this collision, and, in turn, this picture attracts yet other body thetans. (I remember this fairy tale in which a boy with a swan starred; everybody wanted to touch the swan, but once they had, they couldn't get loose. After the first person got stuck, someone tried to pull him loose. He in urn got stuck as well. And the next. And the next. Hubbard's story reminds me of this tale.) Hubbard then goes in a complicated spin, explaining how the collision and the picture of the collision conflate:

Thus we get the concept of a "black theta body". This would
be actual BT's stuck to a thetan plus pictures of BT's stuck to a
thetan.

(p. 81) The solution to this tangled web of stuck body thetans and pictures of stucked body thetans stuck to thetans, is to try and trace the first incident or 'picture' of such a collision or contact, and work from there.

What one has to do is break up the cluster. Clusters are usually derived from Incident II (one is never sure though; they might date back to Incident I). In the real big clusters that are formed in Incident II, these clusters even have hierarchies within the partaking body thetans:

Incident II sometimes forms gigantic clusters. In such there
is a leader, an alternate leader and several (eight to eighteen)
more.

(p. 83) There is alas no reference to the function of this leadership and alternate leadership. Perhaps it's just for the heck of it; after al, they're nasty implanted little bastards. I t is even quite common to find that there are clusters made up out of clusters:

In doing a cluster one is likely to find it is made up of
other earlier clusters.

(p. 90) So how does one break up a cluster? Take 'em through Incident II and then they'll losen up, so that you can address the individual body thetans. As I said before, a lot of work to do here.

Another complication is that it will sometimes only appear as if a body thetan isn't gone, but he fooled ya. He is gone indeed. He just left a trace of himself, and what you are trying to audit away is not the thingie itself:

Thetans in the body may obsessively copy the pictures of
other thetans. Therefore you can find it seems that the thetan
who just left is still there because there is a picture left.

(p. 85) While this may be a nasty trick, there's worse that you may encounter:

Some Body Thetans are suppressive. A suppressive is out of
valence in R6. He is in valence in Incident I almost always.

(p. 78) Suppressive body thetans! Wouldn't you know. Hubbard sees suppressives everywhere. What do you want to do with them? Send them to Ethics? Expel tem from Scientology? Fair game them?

But what is a suppressive body thetan? In Scieno-speak, 'valence' is an adopted personality; 'being out of valence' therefore means behaving as if you're someone else; imposturing, so to say. So when Hubbard says that a body thetan is 'out of valence' in 'R6' - R6 being the Incident II implant - I guess what he means is that this particular body thetans pretend to be linked with the bombing, while in fact they're linked with the cherubs and the Snap Story. The little pranksters!

According to Hubbard, when one manages to rid oneself of all body thetans, one will be able to "accomplish full stable exteriorization" with full perception, that is: get out of your body and move at will through the universe. As L. Ron Hubbard puts it:

"OT III is a vital grade. One fronts up to it and does it.
When he is really done, the rewards of OT III and IV
exceed his wildest dreams."

(p. 93). For me, I think it's not wild at all. Wildly mad, at best.

For completion's sake, and because my grasp of such an ephemere subject as that of body thetans is quite flimsy (and I intend to keep it that way) I further include an exerpt from a book written by Geoffrey Filbert, Excalibur Revisted that deals with OT 3 as well. Filbert goes on at length about the body thetans and the pocedures one should apply on them.

Excalibur Revisted was published in electronic form, and Mr Filbert has given it to the public domain in the fall of 1994. It is, amongst others, available via America Online and has been since December 1994. The material is in fact copyright by Filbert; he recieved his copyright registration on April 25, 1982. Scientology recieved their first copyright filings for their OT 3 material on May 12, 1982... So I guess Filbert predates them. These are pages 266 - 268.

OT III
1. Check for any BTs (E-meter, theta perceptics, intention, pressure areas, telepathy is HOW) on and in:

1. Body surface (WHERE)
2. Body inside
3. In thetan's space (Approx. 40' X 60')
4. On thetan

2. Run Incident 2, then Incident 1, until BT(s) have gone and are released. Then, check for additional Incidents 1's and 2's until dry (on the meter).

3. Return to Step 2, to find new ones to run. Use ruds while running if necessary. There is an effort to stop and hurry on Incident 1.

4. When complete, exact date and run both of the incidents on self.

5. If a bog, do Millazo Pack. Write down some 'mutual associations'. Re each one on this list, FIND THE INCIDENT THAT MADE THEM ONE, and run that. Then, run OT III, Incident 2 and 1 after that cluster is broken up. Occasionally, BTs will have an incident that made them one other then Incident 2, thus this action.

INCIDENT 2: Dates approx. 75 million years ago, earth years, location, Earth, named TEEGEEACK at that time (meaning planet of sorrow), involved 33 planets of this sector, each with populations of 80 - 200 BILLION PER PLANET. XENU, the ruler, and 'Renegades' decided to solve overpopulation as follows, but was halted and XENU placed in a mountain trap after over 5 years of war.

Incident 2 Patter: DETERMINE IF A LOYAL OFFICER, RESIDENT OF EARTH, or FROM ANOTHER PLANET. If the latter two, start at their being picked up and shot and if from another planet, frozen in an ice cube, transported (flying saucer), taken to mountain, a volcano always, H BOMB EXPLOSION, TERRIFIC WINDS, EFFORT TO ORIENT, MAGNETIC STRIP UP FROM CENTER OF VOLCANO OR DOWN FROM AN AIRPLANE, EFFORT TO GET OFF AND FIND REST OF SELF, PROTEST, BEING PULLED ON STRIP, VISUAL DISPLAY OF INSTRUCTION BY A 'GO TO THE PILOT', WHO SAYS 'HE'S MOCKING IT UP'. There are 26 - 29 days of implanting (the CC and OT II, God and Devil material, reasons for this being done, helicopters, etc.) that need not be run. SOME WERE PACKAGED INTO CLUSTERS in the HAWAII and LOS PALMAS ISLANDS (8 to a cluster). If a loyal officer, the sequence is SURPRISE at being shot, placed at the volcano. Use meter to determine and determine volcano. Watch for earlier beginning (pulled in for a tax audit), run only up to the 'HE'S MOCKING IT UP' as BTs can go into 'free fall', spin and get sick from the 29 days implanting, with pneumonia and death the implanted phenomena of free fall in addition to insomnia. Coltus, the Reigning planet, Hubbard a part of the 'rescuing force that put an end to it'. Don't force or push them off, and answer the BTs questions. There were probably not any good or bad guys in this incident, although Hubbard insists the sector to have been a cultural desert since. Very SP BTs can usually be brought around with adept 2WC, Charm, Ruds, but if not use Power Processing on the rare hard core.

Incident 1: Dates 4 QUADRILLION YEARS AGO (which is 15 zeros or 4,000 trillion years ago).

Incident 1 Patter: LOUD SNAP, WAVES OF LIGHT, HORSES DRAWING CHARIOT RIGHT TO LEFT, CHERUB COMES OUT, BLOWS HORN, COMES CLOSE, SHATTERING SERIES OF SNAPS, CHERUB FADES, RETREATS, BLACK MASS IS DUMPED ON THE THETAN.

You clear up that a BT is a body thetan, The instructions are self explanatory, Basically, the reason they are doing this is to where they won't be confused with hundreds of different thoughts so that they can have some peace and quiet, and so they won't be other-determined. After they have run all these remnants of folks out by telepathic auditing on them, they attain the state of freedom from overwhelm and a return of full self determinism. One cleans off those 4 areas in the order listed. It is generally underrun, it is rarely overrun, What you have been doing all the way up the Bridge is breaking these clusters apart. With Expanded Dianetics, Grades and all the previous auditing, you have been taking these off. About 1/2 of the BTs come off and leave and go live their own lives by doing the lower Bridge right, and the other 1/2 come off here by doing OT III correctly. So, if you don't do the lower Bridge correctly on someone and they do a real good job on OT III, they will get about 1/2 of it done. It is pretty wild material to run and the gains of it are beyond description. It is not a crazy idea at all. The irony of it is that it happened alot more than once. It is listed as an event that happened 75 million years ago. It probably happened to the preclear dozens of times. So, watch out for your dates.

After that you do not do OT VII, and then put them on OT III again, like the churches do. You do OT IV which is included here. After they have done that they have attained the state of certainty of self as a being and freedom from uncertainty of self.

On OT V they attain the state of freedom from fixated introversion into MEST and gain the ability to refamiliarize as a thetan exterior with the physical universe.

God ! I am so Tired of the Big Dinosuars

Will will ever be rid of them ? I have become a big fan of this blog called TechDirt, these guys have their finger on the pulse, that is for sure. The old media business models are not only dying, they are effectively dead.

Dead in the sense that there is no longer any vision, the connection to their customer base has been disconnected. The companies that have created animals like the RIAA, Sony , BMG, Atlantic to name a few have gone to the extent of tracking down and suing teenagers, grandmothers and college students.

The world of traditional media and marketing has been turned on it's head, and the clock is ticking. Many of these giants will survive, but in the end only by listening to what the customer wants.

The RIAA is a perfect example. For years, the record industry has been delivering shoddy product, lousy production, crappy records, expensive and bad. I used to talk about it before I abandoned the notion of even attempting to buy a new CD. I would hear something I liked on the radio, rush to buy the CD only to find that there was an A side, a B side and the rest of the albums was recorded and produced in a noisy garage without any heart and soul that a garage band would have.

The attitude many people I talk to about these unfolding events is all pretty much the same. Oh, yeah, I stopped buying CDs a long time ago. Expensive crap. Now you can't even find anything on the radio that you would even want to buy, due to the music industry's control of the airwaves. It's not like there isn't great talent out there, it has just become impossible to find through traditional ways (like listening to the radio)

Many of us can't wait till they crash and burn in the Hell of their own making. Just like what we are watching with the current Bush Administration !

Why the 09ers Are So Upset

Thursday May 3, 2007 by Ed Felten

The user revolt at Digg and elsewhere, over attempts to take down the now-famous “09 F9 …” number, is now all over the press. (Background: 1, 2) Many non-techies, including some reporters, wonder why users care so much about this. What is it about “09F9…” that makes people willing to defend it by making T-shirts, writing songs, or subjecting their dotcom startup to lawsuit risk?

The answer has several parts. The first answer is that it’s a reaction against censorship. Net users hate censorship and often respond by replicating the threatened content. When Web companies take down user-submitted content at the behest of big media companies, that looks like censorship. But censorship by itself is not the whole story.

The second part of the answer, and the one most often missed by non-techies, is the fact that the content in question is an integer — an ordinary number, in other words. The number is often written in geeky alphanumeric format, but it can be written equivalently in a more user-friendly form like 790,815,794,162,126,871,771,506,399,625. Giving a private party ownership of a number seems deeply wrong to people versed in mathematics and computer science. Letting a private group pick out many millions of numbers (like the AACS secret keys), and then simply declare ownership of them, seems even worse.

While it’s obvious why the creator of a movie or a song might deserve some special claim over the use of their creation, it’s hard to see why anyone should be able to pick a number at random and unilaterally declare ownership of it. There is nothing creative about this number — indeed, it was chosen by a method designed to ensure that the resulting number was in no way special. It’s just a number they picked out of a hat. And now they own it?

As if that’s not weird enough, there are actually millions of other numbers (other keys used in AACS) that AACS LA claims to own, and we don’t know what they are. When I wrote the thirty-digit number that appears above, I carefully avoided writing the real 09F9 number, so as to avoid the possibility of mind-bending lawsuits over integer ownership. But there is still a nonzero probability that AACS LA thinks it owns the number I wrote.

When the great mathematician Leopold Kronecker wrote his famous dictum, “God created the integers; all else is the work of man”, he meant that the basic structure of mathematics is part of the design of the universe. What God created, AACS LA now wants to take away.

The third part of the answer is that the link between the 09F9 number and the potential harm of copyright infringement is pretty tenuous. AACS LA tells everyone who will listen that the discovery and distribution of the 09F9 number is no real threat to the viability of AACS or the HD-DVD/Blu-ray formats. A person getting the 09F9 number could, if he or she is technically skillful, invest a lot of work to get access to movies. But there are easier, less tech-intensive ways to get the same movies. Publishing the number has approximately zero impact on copyright infringement.

Which brings us to the civil disobedience angle. It’s no secret that many in the tech community despise the DMCA’s anticircumvention provisions. If you’re going to defy a law to show your disagreement with it, you’ll look for a situation where (1) the application of the law is especially inappropriate, (2) your violation does no actual harm, and (3) many others are doing the same thing so the breadth of opposition to the law is evident. That’s what we see here.

It will be interesting to see what AACS LA does next. My guess is that they’ll cut their losses, refrain from sending demand letters and filing lawsuits, and let the 09F9 meme run its course.

09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0

It's just a string of numbers and letters, right?

A simple, almost random, collection of hexadecimal characters.

No harm could come from posting them, right?

I hope that's the case.

Digg has censored this number and any story submissions or comments referencing it have been buried (well, they haven't found all the comments). Peoples' accounts have been deleted simply for submitting it. Amazing, isn't it?...

Makes you wonder why.

This is why.

In a nutshell: It's the processing key for HD-DVD movies, enabling users to crack the DRM and watch the movie on non-approved hardware (like Linux).

Please, spread this number around. The idea of censoring a number is so silly and totalitarian that I can't sit by in idle silence. We have to resist.
